Why Kurdi School

“I'm of Kurdish origin, but I never learnt the language. When I finally wanted to, I couldn't find a single serious app for Kurmanji. So I built one. Kurdi School is the tool I wish I'd had.”

How it works

What you'll be able to say, within weeks.

10 minutes a day, ten short exercises: a word, some pairs, a sentence to build, a sentence to type. Every unit ends with a Kurdish story.

At the table

Follow what is said around the dish, and answer. Unit 1: greet, introduce yourself, say where you are from.

On the phone with family

Ask how everyone is, talk about your relatives, give the time and the day. Units 2 to 4: family, the day, the house.

At the celebration

Keep up with the stories, the toasts, the songs. Units 5 to 10: invitations, travel, the past, food, culture.

As a family

A letter to Dapîr.

Many of us grew up with the language all around and never learnt it. This is what you will be able to write after three units, in your own words, and send her.

Dapîr,

Silav!Hello!

Çawa yî?How are you?

Ez kurdî fêr dibim.I am learning Kurdish.

Ez ji te hez dikim.I love you.

Oxir be!Goodbye!

After unit 3, you write your own in the app and send it in one tap. Dapîr reads it, she answers in Kurdish. That is where it all begins.

Try it

Your first three words.

A real mini-lesson, no account needed. A mistake costs a heart, like in the app.

Questions

Which Kurdish is this?

Kurmanji, in the Latin alphabet — the Kurdish of Turkey, Syria and the diaspora in Europe. Words and sentences follow the standard written form of the Hawar school.

Who is behind Kurdi School?

An independent cultural and educational project, created by Anthony, who learnt Kurmanji as an adult himself.

Is there audio?

Not yet. Listening exercises already have their place in every lesson and are skipped until the recordings exist.

Can I cancel Plus?

Yes, any time, from your profile. You keep Plus until the end of the month you paid.

Start today. The next family conversation will last a little longer.
